Elk Creek Mountain Bike Trails

Elkin is the only place in North Carolina where three sanctioned trails converge. The Mountains to Sea Trail and the Yadkin River “blue water trail”  are both North Carolina State sanctioned trails. The Overmountain Victory Trail is a Federally sanctioned trail. In a visit to Elkin you can explore all three!

Elkin Valley Trails Association is currently constructing and maintaining “segment 6” of the Mountains to Sea Trail (MST). Our section stretches almost 70 miles from Devils Garden on the Blue Ridge Parkway through Stone Mountain State Park, to Elkin and on to Pilot Mountain State Park. Because of the ongoing construction of various segments of the trail, please check with this link to get the most updated information about trail conditions and openings. EVTA is proud to be part of this trail which stretches from Clingman’s Dome in the Great Smoky Mountains almost 1200 miles to Jockey’s Ridge on the Outer Banks..

Paddling the Yadkin “Blue Water” trail is also a family oriented adventure. There are 6 + outfitters who provide canoes, kayaks and equipment for a mostly gentle and peaceful family float. The river cities like Elkin and the 5 counties, along with the private operators, maintain more the 17 access points along the 125 miles stretch of the Yadkin river basin. Swimming, fishing and camping can be enjoyed by the whole family.

The Overmountain Victory National Historic trail is also a “work in progress”. The Eastern terminus starts in downtown Elkin on its eventual journey, following revolutionary patriots footsteps, to the site of the Battle of Kings Mountain in 1780. Itl will connect near Wilkesboro with the Western trail to create some 330 miles of trail.

Mountains-To-Sea Trail

The Mountains-to-Sea Trail is as diverse as North Carolina. Along the trail, you may see mountain vistas, rolling Piedmont farms, picture postcard colonial towns, weathered tobacco barns, old textile villages, country churches, rushing mountain streams, coastal swamps, hardwood and pine forests, lighthouses, sand dunes, miles of seashore, and friendly people. 680 miles of the route are on trail, and connecting backroads and an optional paddle route allow hikers to trek across the state.

Stone Mountain State Park

The massive granite dome at Stone Mountain State Park keeps watch on park visitors enjoying nearly every type of outdoor activity – camping, hiking, climbing, fishing, picnicking, horseback riding and more. There are more than 18 miles of trails, matched by more than 20 miles of designated trout waters in this park that spreads below the Blue Ridge Parkway. A campground offers 90 sites, some with utility hookups, and group and backpacking campsites are nearby. Rock climbing is allowed by permit on the towering, 600-foot granite face of the landmark mountain, and climbers look down on Hutchinson Homestead, a restored mid-19th century mountain farm. Expansive picnic grounds with shelters invite reunions and community gatherings.

Elkin Dog Park at Crater Park

Located along the Yadkin River, Crater park features a baseball/softball field, multi-use fields, river access with boat ramp, restrooms, and primitive camping. It is the home field for Elkin High School softball and serves as the practice facility for Jr. Elks Youth Football.

Camping is provided for those paddling the Yadkin River only and not for car camping or recreation vehicle camping. Campers should call ahead to Elkin Recreation and Parks (336-258-8917) to insure that bathroom facilities are unlocked. The Elkin Police Department and NC Fish & Wildlife Officers patrol the facility daily.

Crater Park also provides space for the Elkin Dog Park. This space is provided for dog owners to allow their pets to run "off-leash" in a fenced in area. A small and large dog area is provided for pet owners to use. Please read and follow the posted rules and regulations.
